October 2011 New Premises for continued growth

Primary Designs have recently relocated to Unit 10 Thame Park Business Centre,Thame,Oxon.OX9 3XA for continued growth in top level Motorsports and increased demand for our services.

After an exceptional 2011 season,we have now relocated to new modern purpose built premises, this will allow us to have a bespoke Motorsport fabrication facility with a much improved work flow resulting in a greater focus on quality and customer services with the addition of three additional skilled staff and a new apprentice for exhaust fabrication and tube manufacture.

The whole concept of larger premises will be based around improved production facilities ,with emphasis on quality systems and customer satisfaction and the development of our new Supercar Range of exhausts for Ferrari,Lamborghini,Porsche and Aston Martin.

We had outgrown our previous facilty due to the demands of modern F1 teams and investment in new technology that would not have been possible without making the move to new premises.

This is a very exciting step ahead for Primary Designs and its team of engineers and only made possible by the exceptionally loyal customers and reliable supplier base that have grown with us over the last 14 years, during which there has been a great deal of changes in technology and professionalism.

May 2011 ISO 9001 registration

As a commitment to continued improvements in quality and quality systems we are currently working on a quality development program with Citation, who we currently work with as HR and Health and Safety consultants.

We have always avoided ISO registration due to the belief that it would restrict the way in which we work, but an Aerospace customer suggested we should seriously consider it,not because our current systems were poor but merely to make our lives easier with greater control over traceabilty through streamlined quality procedures and systems.

So far we are finding this a very refreshing approach to working on new systems as we can easily design them around existing procedures, systems and documentation.

April 2011   Primary Designs 2011 F1 Season

The 2011 Formula 1 season promises to be as exciting as previous years with a continued relationship in 2011 with a top level Championship contending team we are excited about being able to continue producing Grand Prix winning exhausts throughout the 2011 season.

Our expertise in working with today’s top teams in F1 and experience in the use of exotic materials whilst developing new manufacturing techniques – puts us ahead of the competition for the 2011 F1 season.

Since the beginning of 2010 we have seen F1 cars with Primary Designs exhausts consistently achieving podium finishes.

With many team changes and engineering changes for 2011 we are faced with an exceptionally exciting season involving many more engineering challenges for Primary Designs to solve and develop.

Supercar Exhaust packages are Primary objective

Pat Barrett, Managing Director and Founder of Primary Designs commented:

Until recently, our prime markets were Formula One and Le Mans, however due to recent corporate expansion we were able to respond to product demand which initiated the launch of our Supercar Exhaust packages. The materials and methods we use in the fabrication of our performance systems are exclusive to us and are road and track proven – with our F1 qualified engineers having a combined experience of over 70 years in the industry, we have the quality, precision and consistency to continue to deliver exceptional products, both to the motorsport industry and consumers alike.

The Primary Designs package typically incorporates the exhaust manifolds, uprated turbo’s (where applicable)and high-flow German manufactured HJS sports catalysts which are Euro 5, TUV and VOSA approved and sports silencer which are often ceramic coated using one of the the many colour options offered by Zircotec.

They also offer track day silencers for Lamborghini and Ferrari.

Primary Designs were appointed in 2010 as an official agent for
Turbo Dynamics, a leading supplier and manufacturer of turbochargers and associated tuning parts.

Supercar Exhaust products are available in 304/321 stainless steel, Titanium and Inconel . All of their systems are handcrafted by F1 experienced exhaust fabricators and precisely TIG welded using Argon Hytec gas for welding stainless steel and Inconel and are back purged with 100% pure Argon. The titanium products are welded in a zero% oxygen free welding chamber with 100% pure Argon. Neither of these processes are the cheapest option, but they are used in preference to ensure their clients of the highest quality and contaminant free precision welds.

TIG welding is the only option in welding the exotic materials that Primary Designs utilise, with superior arc and weld pool control. TIG allows the fabricator to create precise, clean welds where appearance and weld integrity are important. As the heat input is controlled by the use of a foot pedal, TIG welding allows precise control of the weld bead.

Supercar Exhaust system is currently available for Porsche, Aston Martin, Lamborghini, Ferrari and BMW M Series and will increase power by as much as 30BHP.

Jan 2011 ISO BS EN 51614 Welding proceedure certification

With increased involvement with Military and Aerospace contracts we have found it necessary to achieve this highly respected certification for welding proceedures involving what are commonly referred to as exotic alloys namely Nickel alloys such as Inconel 625 and 718.

ISO BS EN 51614 is an Aerospace industry standard for welding proceedures using High Temperature Nickel alloys found in both Aircraft and Aerospace applications such as exhaust ducts on Phantom jet fighters and Harrier jump jets. This accreditation is both necessary from a customer requirement but also displays our high standard of craftmanship and dedication to quality.

This has been very satisfying for our team of engineers that took us through the processes required to achieve this, some of them only just out of Apprenticeships who have futhered this by undertaking Weld codings to ISO BS EN 287, Primary Designs are exceptioanlly proud of the team of young engineers who acheived such a high accolade.

Investment in Faro measuring arm

FARO portable measuring arms make measuring complex objects easy. This includes alignment, calibration, inspection, reverse engineering and as-built documentation with an accuracy up to 16 microns

A Formula 1 car or Supercar is a technically advanced excercise in vehicle engineering, whose many parts must be manufactured,to an exceptionally high degree of precision.None less so than the exhaust system on an F1 car,Le Mans car or Supercar.

As exhaust packaging becomes more complex the challenges continue to grow for the engineers at Primary Designs, with the need for precision jigging systems and the ability to measure exhaust systems being a major factor in exhaust design and manufacture.

Measuring arms, such as a portable Faro Fusion Measuring arm, are one solution to the growing demand for increasing precision in the automotive industry. The FARO portable measuring arms make measuring complex objects easy. This includes alignment, calibration, inspection, reverse engineering and as-built documentation with an accuracy up to 0.01mm.

In addition to the use of the Faro Measuring arm (CMM) being used in house for accurate jigging and exhaust manufacture,Primary Designs will be offering an On-Site measuring service to the Motorsport Industry.

The Faro Measuring arm combined with Faro CAM2 Q software will allow us to accurately measure a customer car on site, from this data we will then be able to use TubeExpert and Solid Edge ST2 to design the optimum exhaust layout.

Launch of new onsite 3D measuring and inspection service

Primary Designs can now offer a greater level of quality and inspection with investment in the latest technology, with a higher degree of accuracy of finished components.

Investment in Faro Arm Fusion will allow Primary Designs to inspect, reverse engineer and check jigs and fixtures to a new higher level.
Primary Designs now offer an on-site inspection service using the FaroArm, whether you need your BTCC shell measured to check suspension geometry, or the inside of the car to construct a safety cell/roll cage or any other inspection information you may need to have as CAD data(Step, Iges etc)

Primary Designs can now come to your workshop and produce an envelope in which to package your exhaust, water and oil pipes or roll cage and then transfer this data into CAD files which will enable us to produce a 3D working model and also produce jigs and fixtures for your project using TubeExpert and Siemens Solid Edge ST3.
